the inheritance of loss

"THE REVIEW GIVEN BELOW IS PURELY BASED ON MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE BOOK AND MIGHT NOT BE IN SYNC WITH ALL THE OTHER READERS"

the booker prize winning novel is a story about helplessness one has to experience through his journey called life; the similar helplessness which we experienced in darchula. a lot of rungs in darchula(nepal) would be able to give first-hand details about the time when we lived in fear of the maoists and of the darkness. a time when we were not even allowed to have the lights switched on at night after 9 pm. a time when anything in green could instill fear within us. a time when youngsters of chhangru were not allowed to enter their own villages by their own parents fearing that they would be forced to join the maoists.
the novel revolves around 5 characters; four of them based in kalimpong and 1 based in new york working as a cook in an indian restaurant. the story is about the west taking control of the east, about people running towards the west not knowing that they might not even be able to crawl back to their motherland.
kiran has been both direct and subtle in many ways. the story is easy paced and full of subtle humor.
the novel enunciates the helplessness of a judge who has been a student in the UK, a girl who is madly in love with a nepalese revolutionary, a cook working for the judge who's son is working as a cook in new york to make a fortune(and the irony is that he comes back to kalimpong with only a pair of shorts on himself)...

a lot of humour too... you'll love the novel...

into thin air.. 5 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 1
picked up a book after such a long time.. was recommended to kavi by one of her professors in school... sayin a must read and she said this couple of times that i had to get it...

so far have only read through couple of chapters... but its riveting so far.. its by Jon Krakauer a US based amateuer mountaineer and a writer doing a report for Outlook magazine on everest.. initially he was offered to report from the base camp but he thought if he is going that far why not climb it as well... his journey to everest was so full of events and tales that he wasn't sure if his 17,000 words report on Outlook would do justice.. so he ended up writing a book on it.. much of it was due to the guilt that he was one of the fews that survived the expedition... that year was among one of the worst years in terms of number of climbers perishing on a single day on everest..

looking forward to finishing the boook in a few days.. a must read for everyone.. anyone wants to loan the book after i am done

Re:Movies, Books & Music: ChakDe.. 5 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Simply loved the movie. And yeah, Shahrukh's different for once in his life. You can see and feel the Shahrukh we saw in Darr, DDLJ....different and briliant.

The good thing about the movie is that it's not a 'Shahrukh Khan movie'. It's a movie about hockey, the spirit, the hardwork, the hurdles and about the people who love the game. I personally felt that the direction was bit raw. But all forgiven as this is the first attempt for such kinda movies. I Salute such directors(likes of DCH, Lakshya, RD who time and again blow life into the otherwise monotonous Indian Cinema . There ain't no songs, boring love scenes, maar-dhaad. And few of the reel-life players in the movie are real-life hockey players..

The movie builds up like a hollywood movie. The team starts from scratch, then the build-up phase, problems popping up, and the way the team handles it all. You are gonna love it. If you like this, should definitely go for Miracle (2004 release, Hollywood).

A must see,...............coz hockey still runs in our blood!!
