Indian cricket team is back to salvage some of badly lost pride in mumbai. One inexplicable loss and another unexpected victory, i guess accounts are squared up.
i was just going through the last poll results and found there are also some good signs in the results.
How often do you speak the Rung-Lo?
Always 16.38 % (19)
Sometimes 27.59 % (32)
Not as much as I want to 34.48 % (40)
Very Little 13.79 % (16)
Dont know the Lo 7.76 % (9)
Total votes: 116
it shows that at least 92% people have still some touch with language and 50% people do have inclination to speak.
hope younger generation realizes the value of own language and these percentages will improve a great deal more.
the new map is coming out quite well and here we are really fortunate to have hemen bhai's expertise.
we have a new section WIKI being installed soon, again hemen's idea. here potential is there to do great many things.
Soon there will be AGM in Dharchula and i hope if any of our audience and participating members go to AGM, they would try and spread not only awareness but also get some offline participation from dharchula.
Jhyangmothon is nearing as well. We have received some feedback on it. Many people do not see direct impact on society for this as yet. But as i was trying to discuss with people, the potential of event like jhyangmothon is far reaching in terms of providing today's youth at home some platform to chanelize their energy. the organizational skills that we would be able hone in this event and energy from this will help other events that can be offshoots and spin offs in future. this is not just a running event but an event which would bring the local community together on social level. The local organizations and non rung communities if made part of it and with initiative from rung mung...we can really make a beginning which would later help get collaboration from different segments of local society to initiate many self help efforts.
And as i am typing this india needs 13 more in 22 balls with 4 wickets in hand ( quiet frankly i had sworn off indian cricket team a few weeks back :) )

Been a week or so since i last blogged anywhere... and seems like a longtime ago already.
i had read, heard and seen so much about Rang De Basanti( RDB ) that i was dying to see it.Finally there came a decent pirated print in Dhaka and i just couldnt hold myself back. i was dead beat after the recent weeks' hectic schedule, head was throbbing but i had to see it somehow and so i did.
i think there have been very few movies in our times which are generation defining movies. i can recall Hyderabad Blues, Dil Chahta Hai among a few others maybe with Swades also in this set. Rang De Basanti i think would be really remembered for a long time to come as another generation defining movie.
it is almost a sequel to Dil chahta Hai in someway. If DCH was a movie where careless youth finds its soul in the arms of love or atleast in the relaization of it, RDB goes a step beyond, beyond the self.
i was watching with 2 south indian friends who in a way were not aware of many of the details of the indian freedom struggle specially in up north. i was trying to explain to them about Jaliwanwala bagh and General Dire's act of cowardice in firing upon innocent people there. I didnt know that it would be such an emotional thing for me, as i was explaining i could feel a lump in my throat and eyes were getting moist all of a sudden.
I sat there for a long time with thoughts racing thru my mind after the movie was over. the thing that resonates with all of us today is when one of the characters says something to the effect that " i never knew that there would be something that would jolt us to the point of action someday". i guess we all are also in the same situation, a generation in status quo.
Kuchh kar gujarane ko jee chahta hai...
Aey Khuda, kuchh kar gujarane ki taqdeer de...
Manjilen na sahee... manjilon ki khwahish de...

this is the title of the book i am trying to read these days.it is written by Jared Diamond.
the book actually envisages to trace the human history and try to find out as to why some civilizations or races became conquerors and others became vanquished.
it starts out looking into spanish invasions of great Inca and Aztec civilizations and tries to see what the deseases brought by europeans played a part in decimating the american indian empires. how they used guns , horses and their guile to defeat and decieve these mighty empires.
behind all the great stories of victories there are sad stories of vanquished.
there is a lesson for us rung mung also unless we want to be vanquished people to lose our land and culture some day.

i don't know how the mind works.
i don't know how the world works.
this afternoon i was in busy traffic of Dhaka city and passing by the beautiful gardens in front of parliament building. this garden is used as afternoon tryst joint by friends and lovers. by evening it becomes melting pot of picnickers.
now you must be wondering where in the hell is the connection between the title and these surroundings.
to kill your suspense.... there is none!! :)
this is why i said i don't know the mind works.
while looking at this my mind was working in another direction. i was trying to figure out if any management job candidate was asked this question in interviews, who would you liked to play in Matrix, Neo or Morpheus and why ?
In my opinion choice between these 2 characters would reveal a great deal about nature of the person.
in my opinion Matrix as a movie made me seriously think about many things. the greatest thing about the movie is, it tickles you to think, what if.
i would love to hear you guys opine about these two characters and then i shall give you my opinions as well. Girls / women don't shy away as the Neo and Morpheus are symbolic characters and not typically rooted in gender or male oriented only.

after climbing many peaks..
and taming many a slopes...
finally he gets thru the redtapes of indian government
i think in 2005 he has finally got his due by the way of 2 of the highest national awards in the sports field.
i have always known him has Mohan singh hya ITBP wale in my younger days and sometimes when we met him it would be a few anecdotes on skiing. Then he climbed Everest and ever since he became Mohan singh hya everest waale. Unfortunately like many of us i have been away from home and our people so much that somehow never got around to share a long chat with him and only way i got to know about his exploits was thru article in Amtikar last year.
then i googled some information on him last year to discover more about the mountaineers who have made it big from rungmung
Name of the climber : MOHAN SINGH (GUNJYAL)
Individual climber number : 379
Nationality : Indian
Date : 12.05.1992
Route : S Col - SE Ridge
Team Leader : Hukam Singh
Name : Suman Kutiyal
Female climber number ( overall in the world ) : 28
Overall Summitter Number : 487
Date : 16. 05. 1993
Nationality : Indian
Route : S Col - SE Ridge
Team Leader : Bachendri Pal (f)
this information is collected from : http://www.adventurestats.com/tables/
also : our oldest mountaineer Ms. Chandraprabha Aitwal who unfortunately could not complete her summit dream ( same year when bachendri pal made it .. if i remember)
i still remember waiting for the radio news everyday during that year to hear about her....
she is probably first rung to receive Arjuna Award and Padma Sree Award!! and now Mohan Singh Hya has joined ranks with her.
Mohan singh hya's story is inspiring for many reasons and for me special one is that he somehow paved his way up in his field of passion. The ITBP jobs which have been employment source for many rung mung have remained only employment for people and there are not many examples where someone had found within the job, avenues to mix the skill and opportunities to achieve something for himself, organization and his own people.

talking of simon and garfunkel... there is another beautiful piece of lyrics by them...
it goes ....
--------------------
OLD FRIENDS
Words & music by paul simon
------------------------------
Old friends,
Old friends
Sat on their park bench
Like bookends.
A newspaper blown though the grass
Falls on the round toes
Of the high shoes
Of the old friends.
Old friends,
Winter companions,
The old men
Lost in their overcoats,
Waiting for the sunset.
The sounds of the city,
Sifting through trees,
Settle like dust
On the shoulders
Of the old friends.
Can you imagine us
Years from today,
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange
To be seventy.
Old friends,
Memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fears

prompted by the words of wisdom from yogesh's last post...
here are the lyrics of another classic doing rounds in my head....
( another song which took me home was John Denver's Country roads... )
the things i cant do but are mentioned in the song are being a poet, playing the guitar and there is no love yet waiting silently anywhere :)
and the things i dont do is cigarettes :)
Homeward Bound : Paul Simon
------------------------------
I’m sittin’ in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one man band
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought’s escaping
Home, where my music’s playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Everyday’s an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me
The movies and the factories
And every stranger’s face I see
Reminds me that I long to be
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought’s escaping
Home, where my music’s playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Tonight I’ll sing my songs again
I’ll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptyness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought’s escaping
Home, where my music’s playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Silently for me
Silently for me

i was browsing thru site and was reading updates on jhyangmothun
http://www.rungmung.net/RungJyangnee/index.php
i had missed out on a bit of chit chat in comments there.
couple of comments set me off again this is what came out at first .........( after tapping in this rant :) i realized that we have 500 charcters barrier on the comments .. so i thought lets dicuss a bit in here as well )
again a discalimer here is needed i guess that this is loud thinking to share thoughts and maybe get enlightened by your responses in the bargain....
http://www.rungmung.net/RungJyangnee/index.php
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(there was a comment mentioning that we should do something to help poorer rungmung instead of spending huge amount on this jhyangmothun)
as for the relevance of the event and scale of expenditure. i think this event is not extravagance but an investment in future from the point of view of spurring on rung mung.
i dont know as of now better ways to help poor rung mung and i also dont know if any of the doubters are doing anything to help poor rung mung but our efforts should be testimony to our thinking and i hope that they show that we are thinking about community all the time and not of money
jhyangmotthun is not just an exercise to run or something to promote running. it will prove also how rung mung are capable of collaborating on community oriented projects, specially the current generation. this would spur someone to do something more directly useful for poor people.
none of us can do anything alone and we can do a lot more if we work together and not just sit on the fence and doubt.
the efforts on making this website and discussion on yahoogroups are evidence of that.
doubts are welocme but more welcome when doubters contribute to overcome the challenge that doubts throw up.
here everyone's effort and encouragement is needed.
for the person who had raised doubt, it would have been great if there was a suggestion for example ,that from this marathon effort we raise some money to help patch up dilapidated GIC dharchula building which is the only resort for poor people to get education in dharchula ( ofcourse alongwith GGIC).
-------------------------------
here also i would like to mention about the two successful follow-ups on the discussions we had in yahoogroups so far. one was by bonal ji from lucknow and the next follow up was by mayank, komal & pankaj ( all three young engineering students). they have really done a good job of it.
these collaborated efforts should give us opportunity to build a bridge between these rudderless young hopefuls and enlightened rung mung ( in pankaj's words "chhant katinda mung").
i hope we can get something more regular going soon from these efforts.
here i had forgotten to mention archana budiyal's name :) ( sorry archana !!)she also played a big part in this enthusiastic group and we hope that this group will do a lot more in future
