Everytime I go home the biggest ting I miss is internet access..coupled with lack of electricity as well. I dont miss television or mobile phones etc when I am in Roong or any of our villages. With the formation of pahadi state I was hoping that world would change for us sooner than later.. but later seems to be true as mobile services and internet services are tied to government's ignorant and whimisical policies. Now Nepal government alongwith ADB seems to be trying to make internet reach the hinterlands. It is written that 38 districts have been selected for this project. Can someone find out if Darchula district made it in the list? nepal internet

So I am back again in the plains of our state...or to be precise in doon valley. Yesterday was day for Rung AGM in doon. This time it was a scaled down version as compared previous years. But i think a lot more was discussed in the meeting specially on vision 2020. After this meeting Sangstha core group will meet again to incorporate all the discussions and feedback into vision 2020 document. Meeting went on from 11AM to almost 6.30 PM ( quite a marathon). Dehradoon shakha people must be commended for their efforts and people also who came from different places for the meeting. 3 main shakhas which could not send anyone for this meeting were delhi, lucknow and pithoragarh. Hope they will send their feedbacks later. Evening brought curtains down on the AGM with a really entertaining cultural program. Kids, Jyod mung and syan mung all participated and entertained everyone. Specially the rung baira mung from surendra singh rongkli ji, guddu napalchyal, chhambo kutiyal bhai were pick of the things. Hope we will see a much more detailed report from Yogesh and co. with pics on this soon

today i did a small round of all the links given by Pankaj and Pramod. It is nice to see youngsters getting together to do something creative. ideally would have loved the news to be broken by one of the members of this group.. and i think we would wait for someone to write a small article from this group so that we can put that as introduction. for others who havent been part of it yet... here are the links again and list of members : "Rung Mung Literary Society Member's" 1.Mahesh Garbyal P.U Chandigarh,3rd Yr ( Chemical Engg.) , City-Chandigarh 2.Shekhar Phakaliyal A.I.E.T Lucknow , b.Tech.-Final Yr (Electronics Engg.), City- Lucknow 3.Yateesh Singh Bonal M.N.N.I.T Allahabad , 2nd Yr ( Electro.&Comm. Engg.) , City- Allahabad 4.Manish Singh Dariyal B.I.E.T Jhansi , 3rd Yr ( Electro.&Comm.Engg.),City -Jhansi 5. Pramod Singh Dugtal Marine Engg.& Research Inst. ( Hotal Management), City-Porvorim ( Goa) And More.................................... "Rung Mung Literary Event....." "Welcome to Rung Mung Literary Society" Members currently seem to be from engineering and science background. this maybe due to the fact that in these institutes internet is easily available. would love to see some arts/ commerce background students as well to add variety and while at it why leave behind our dear doctors.... good going guys!! keep it up..!! do a write up and keep in touch with pramod and amit to find quickers solutions for implementation... i think students in USA also can also take part... but that is something for group members to decide... as for magazene.. i think e-mag would be easier to put together and publish. we can also publish it at local level by doing and download and getting loca DTP/Printers to publish it in different cities for distribution. Then one can even look at generation small maybe but significant Ad-revenue from it by getting online and local pblishing mix. I suggest members of the group to take some guidance from Jeewan da also in this venture as he is in the creative field for a long time now...!!Another creative person has just logged back.. that is our good old Deebee hya !!! and then maybe there would be ubiquitous t-shirts ... I suggest " I am a CATalyst.. R U ?"

for last few months Amit has been struggling to find time between his job and commuting schedule, to transport rungmung.net to a new platform. this CMS based( content management) approach and we have used JOOMLA (and open source CMS) for this ( not to be confused humla jumla and jumlis from back home ) in order to save time for people to reguster again we are tryingt to transport the user base from geneology to this. u can most probably use your old geneology logins for this. Amit has mailed users already about this. initially a few things will be different but once we pass throught this phase of user authentication and familiarity grws it will be much better approach to our website management and usage. please do give us your feedback while there, try out new genealogy which is upgraded version and has a better user experience.

WGA... storm in the teacup..!!

Recently many of the windowsXP users have experienced around the world brunt of temptingly named utility sent at the time of updates, WGA, which stands for windows genuine advantage. i guess everyone would have thought that this would bring them some santa claus goodies from Bill Gate's house and let it be loaded on their computers. Little did people know that after sometime this genuine adavantage would turn into big disadvantage. As there is a huge majority of people who buy OEM installed operating systems and many users are also not aware of how software was loaded on their machines, there were shocked users around the world when doing a regular update their machine tells them in sweetest and vaguest manner " you maybe running a non genuine copy of windowsXP". that essentially means, Micrsoft is saying boss you haven't paid for this piece of software so please pay up now!!! It has irked some people so much that 2 class action lawsuits has been filed in USA stating that WGA comes under spyware. Now after lot of customer outrage Microsoft has decided that it will check for the genuineness only on periodic basis ( it seems this was happening on daily basis before) People had feared that Microsoft may employ windows kill if they think your copy is not genuine but Microsoft has denied this as of now. But all said and done windows maybe digging its own grave if this goes on. As more softwares like openoffice.org etc become available on Linux platform ( essentially free) i guess windows may start losing customer base. India, which may have a huge base of pirated windows installation can be a big threat to microsoft if the hardware vendors really start promoting Linux in right way. Most of the Linux implementations essentially run and feel similar to windows which can help users migrate very easily.Biggest factor is that there is no way someone accusing you of being pirate!!!! I had come across recently Ubuntu which really was quite easy to work with. One would need high bandwidth to download it but maybe you can easily find copies from right people to try it out.

came across one nice site with some computer history. oldcomputers.net has so many of these old computers catalougued. another site worth going to is computerhistory.org which has many of the odl copmuter sales catalogues, dating back to 1950. this is IBM5155 : probably first portable computer IBM portbale this is compaq's first portable computer compaq portable and this is word's first computer with mouse.called alto developed by paolo alto research centre of XEROX. ( dont tell me u cant find the mouse in the picture :) ) alto Pc

today i think i did more than my fair share of browsing... normally i browse our site rungmung and then follow a few indian blogs then these days have started to check out google news as well. google news is quite informative. today i ended up on another site called "digg" from there. digg.com is interesting for science and tech news ... it was very interesting to go through so many interesting things that are happening in the world today. then i somehow ended up on the site of ncomputing as well. these guys are bringing back the concept of thin client terminals into the computing world. as today's normal pc is many times faster than some of the main frames of decades back, they have worked out technology which allows one pc to be shared by many users at the same time or even be accessed from anywhere in the world. they are trying to bring in these things someday to $10 per box !!! as of now i think a box sells for 250 usd. i think one has to add the cost of monitor + software + mouse+ keyboard. this would typically suit some small office and school environment where one can buy a pc and add these terminals. but to suit indian market one would have to bring price to that dream range of usd 50-100 and then it would make sense. while writing this i was wondering if there is any site which gives current prices on PC components and finally i found one here....delta peripherals using this data i was trying to figure out how much a decent PC would cost . here is my thought components ( price INR ) intel 2.8 ghz processor (4750) decent mother board (3500) hdd 80 gb (2450) combo drive (1450) RAM 512 mb (2350) case (1200) mouse (475) keyboard (425) monitor 17" (5250) total (21850) that makes it almost 500 usd!!! as of now industrywide attempts are on to make usd 100 machine... lets see when that happens and then where the thin client terminals would stand .. one would still find thin client terminals short on may things...! the cheap doesnt come without cost( feature) cutting.
